What's new

VSL shameless "fanboyism" thread

It's confusing. Is the fast legato in SS1 the same as agile legato in SSP? And is the agile legato in DuaS the same as in SSP?

DuaS to SSP: Duality Strings are complete new recordings, so here definitely not the same
SS1 to SSP: I think also different, but not 100% sure on that

Ok. I've found this thread:

DuaS agile sounds WAY better than SSP agile and presumably SS1 fast legato.

Shame, I really like the sound of SS1, but one of the things I wanted from it was the DuaS level of agile legato.

Yes, unfortunately you are correct regarding the agile legatos. VSL have developed a new way of creating the fast legato patches. This was used in DS but both SSP and Elite have the old legatos which unfortunately suffer from artifacts when playing certain patterns. The video I made in that thread exposes this difference in a rather "scientific" manner though. When used to create real music, the SSP legatos are actually not that bad. But Duality strings legatos are definitely better. There are however other parts of SSP and Elite which I personally find better than DS counterparts, especially the staccatos. I should say also that I dont have SS1 and can therefore not comment on that library.

The line you made for the testing is actually something I'd write, it's far from "rather scientific" to me. 😀

The agile legato from DuaS sounds truly amazing. But all the other articulations, I have to say I prefer SS1 over both DuaS and SSP.

So spending 425e for just the legato and 275e for the rest is quite steep for me right now. (more so when I'm saving money for Synchron Brass.)

Would be nice if Vienna reedited the SS1 fast legato to be able to handle the same stuff DuaS agile can.

It's weird Vienna has come the 8Dio/Spitfire route, that rather than building up the existing libraries, they record new ones. I'd much prefer Aaron's Infinite approach of making the existing libraries better and better rather than floading us with new libraries.

VSL is like catch all the Pokemons now. There are multiple orchestral sized libraries, VI and Synchron, multiple chamber sized libraries, VI and Synchron, each with all the usual stuff and some unusual and you should just get them all in case you'd need some detail those other don't cover. 🤷‍♂️

I went in for the Synchron Strings Pro/1 pair. Will evaluate SS1 over the trial period to see if I find it adds enough to Pro to be worth keeping.

I’ll no doubt pay another tourist visit to Dualityland as the series matures in the medium term future…

In that case, I am delighted that you came across that video 😄

I am pretty sure that I have read somewhere that this is not possible to achieve by editing alone. The new VSL legato approach requires samples to have been recorded in a certain way, which the SS1 (and SSP and Elite) are not.

I finally use my vouchers and get my first VSL library with Duality Strings, and is awesome in many ways. Amazing really, step ahead of everything that I have in Strings department for sure. Looking further to go full Synchron Orchestra, I would happily sell my others complete orchestra but isn’t possible.

Shame, the sheer number of dynamic layers and repetitions in SS1 is really appealing to me. Also the sound is incredible.

But I've never heard anything like DuaS agile legato in the sample world. It's really something special.

This is really frustrating, yea. I'd sell nearly everything just to own a lot of VSL stuff. Now I'm without money and without Vienna libraries. 😅

I'll be saving for black friday and hopefully there'll be a brass sale during the year.

@biomuse Just buy all three :emoji_blush:
Two outta three ain’t bad - I bought SS1 + SSPro, have been working with both, alone and with Elite Strings. Definitely keeping the SS1 crossgrade - the tone really is gorgeous and the various legato transitions and dynamic layers do add something to SSP. The Optimized version download of SS1 - that only includes what isn’t recapitulated in SSP - was a nice thought by VSL. Definitely worth the crossgrade price.

Sale still seems to be up. I need this to end so I can see what's next (saving my vouchers for a Percussion sale, unless something crazy new comes along).

The optimized version doesn't contain some specific SS1 things though so I keep full SS1 instead of Optimized one..!)

Yes, it looks from the comparison table like VSL’s judgment on what to eliminate was pretty decent, but there are a few things that are missing between the two of them, including big multi-velocity-layer dynamic arcs - I’ll need to free up more drive space to take advantage.

Oh no, I checked Synchron Percussion I to III. Wow, so many mallets, articulations, dyn layers and so little money...

But I'm nearly there to have enough for Synchron Brass! YAY! I hope Brass is the next sale!!! :2thumbs:

Have you already checked out these presets?

It does more than just EQing as well, but EQing does the heavy lifting of course.
If it's okay with you, @Ben, that the settings are shared publicly? Would someone be kind enough to share the settings for the SSP Muted presets from the standard library? (For each section, if there are any significant differences, respectively).

I'd like to apply them to Duality Strings regular.

although I love using my synchron libraries back at home, I am increasingly scared of traveling with my ilok dongle fearing it may get damaged or stolen, and ilok cloud is really not reliable, definitely not while on the go. I know this has been discussed before, but I think at least a few of us would truly appreciate an ilok machine activation option.

Or, for the love of roquefort, an ability to install two licenses on one (1) desktop and one (1) laptop CPU at the same time. Is it really so impossible to classify hardware at this point?
