Why I Don't Use a Mac By Dan Worrall:

You've got a lot of TB/USB3 ports then. I have the same Mac; was very happy to have the two front TB ports, as they allowed me the shortest path from my machine closet-housed Mac, thru the wall, and to my interface rack so I can connect my interface (MOTU 828es) via TB while facing the Mac's rear ports and power switch toward the machine closet door in the tracking room. Despite the fact the Mac is almost dead silent, the back up and archive HDs are still as noisy as ever, so the closet is nice to have.

Understand your frustration in "wasting" the port but, at least in my case, the main port shortage is in the USB A area, necessitating hubs anyway, so I'm hoping you found a good solution overall.

Anyway, glad you ultimately got the interface issue sorted.

Here's what my M1 Mac Studio setup looks like currently:

- 4 unused thunderbolt ports (or are they called lightning now? whatever)
- USB port #1 goes to a PreSonus Studio 24c
- USB port #2 goes to a USB 7-port hub from Best Buy
- the hub has: iLok, Vienna Key, my keyboard, my mouse, and my KeyStation 88
- two spare ports for an "Extra Samples" SSD and a "Project Backups" SSD (not always plugged in).

it works fine... and my setup is probably not fairly unique ;)
