M.2 enclosure recommendations for Mac Studio

This one was the one I bought and is said to work the fastest with the Acasis, and it is fast.

WD_BLACK 2TB SN750 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen3 PCIe, M.2 2280, 3D NAND, Up to 3,400 MB/s - WDS200T3X0C https://a.co/d/bLMf64z

I don’t know why that won’t show as a URL.
I can concur, but i have the 4tbyte black, reliable , works great! Acasis thunderbolt 3 version though.

P3+ has faster speeds, but in the Acasis enclosure there will be zero difference.

P3: 3500 MB/s read
P3+: 5000 MB/s read
Acasis enclosure: 2800 MB/s
TB3 and TB4 don't go faster than aprox 2800 MB/s for data.

Edit:

TB can go up to 40Gbps but there's like 14Gbps reserved for video (display port) and then 26Gbps for data. But the TB protocol has some overhead so in reality it's more like 22-23Gpbs.

By the time a faster protocol is available in new Macs and there are new enclosures that also support it, replacing the drive and enclosure together will be more likely. These will become the old drive + enclosure for more pedestrian tasks.

Perennial post!

Update: yesterday was exactly a year since I ordered the Acasis.

It's been absolutely perfect (with a 4TB Crucial P3+).

...not that I want to tempt fate!
Hello Nick

I just ordered a Mac Studio M2.Max 64Gb 2Tb

I want to expand the SSD storage..

Based on this thread, I am thinking to order this combo:

- Crucial P3 Plus 4TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD interno - até 4800MB/s - CT4000P3PSSD801 (Edição Acronis) https://amzn.eu/d/4PHta7V

- Acasis M.2 NVMe Caixa de disco rígido incorporada 40 GB USB C alumínio capa PCIe 2280 M Key/B + M Key compatível Thunderbolt 3/4 USB 3.2/3.1/3.0/C https://amzn.eu/d/31b4AYx

Is it a good buy for my first Mac?

I'd say yes, with one caveat: the Crucial P3 Plus doesn't have onboard cache memory, and if you're writing big files that could make a difference.

My suggestion is to contact Acasis and ask them which 4TB drives they recommend for their enclosure.

I use Acasis thunderbolt enclosure and dock for storage expansion and VSL librabries, they have been working fine for years plugging in my MBP 16 M1 Max 24/24, hope it would help you.

For the storage, I'm only using 2TB Samsung 980 Pro in the enclosure, not sure about the 4TB yet, you might need to ask them for recommendations.

Hello,

I have exactly what you want to buy (Crucial P3 Plus 4TB inside an Acasis M.2 NVMe) on my MacStudio M2 Max and it's working well.

As said Nick you should be aware of the P3 Plus cache: use it for read only most of the time (put your
VI libraries on it and let some space free) and you should be ok :)

Regards,
Gil.

Thank you guys! Very helpful.

Would the Samsung 990 Pro 4TB be a safer investiment?

For the last 6 days, I have been using three of the new OWC Express 1m2, each loaded with 4TB of WD SN850X and it has been rock solid. Each of the enclosures, which are USB4 bus powered are connected to their own USB4/TB4 port on my Mac Studio M2. I get 3100 MB/s read and write and I had them running for at least 20 minutes straight maintaining that speed while I copied all of my 10TB of libraries to them when I first installed them. They never got hotter than 70 degrees Celsius and they did not throttle down at any point. The normal idle and real world usage temperature is between 45 and 50 degrees celsius. The spec for the WD drive is that they can run up to 90 degrees and so I never got close to that. Of most importance to me, I have not gotten any of the disconnects with them being bus powered that TB bus powered users have been experiencing with multiple drives. So far my hypothesis of USB4 placing less demand voltage-wise on the USB/TB bus is holding up.

It looks like Amazon updated the availability for the 990pro to December 27th. It was February the other day and so I went with the WD SN850X. Unless you want it with the Samsung heatsink built in but then it won't fit many enclosures.

Do you really need the Heatsink if you're mounting the 990pro in the Acasis enclosure (which claim to have an excellent heat dissipation system)?

No you shouldn’t need the heat sink. That is more for the Play Station users. I was referirng To the fact that most places are back ordered on the 4TB non heat sink version until February. Unless the samsung 990 is the same price as the WD 850x, I wouldn’t spend more on it since with both of these models, in an external enclosure, you won’t be using any of the speed specs. I think you will get better sustained transferswhich I proved already with the WD SN850x.

What's the difference between the ANYOYO and the ACASIS enclosures please?
The specs look exactly the same.
I ordered the anyoyo, is there an issue with it?

Sorry in advance if it's been already asked.

It uses USB 3.2, which Macs don't support. That doesn't mean it won't work, just that you won't get the full spec.

The Acasis enclosures are 4X the price and are higher-performance (they use Thunderbolt 3 if you connect them to a Mac).

Thanks for the quick feedback. I'm a bit confused.
I bought this one which says the brand is Anyoyo: https://shorturl.at/qrxJ4
And saw this other one which got Acasis in the name but which is not 4x the price:

Thanks again for your help.

I can't open those links from America, unfortunately.

If you go back to the beginning of this thread you'll see the difference in transfer rates. It may or may not make any difference in the real world, but you do have to pay $100 or more for 2500Mb/s transfers.
