this is a copy of an answer I gave to my own question on NI's forum. The original question is not so important but I thought I'd share this:
Create a new patch with two groups. Add a modulator to one of these group (e.g. in the amp section, but that's unimportant). Select "Edit All Groups". Move a CC row from the automation list to the percentage slider of this new modulator. Although the modulator is only present in one group there are two automation entries shown in the lower list of the automation tab. And even better, if I remove the modulator these two automation entries stay there. It's hard to keep a patch maintainable this way. Solution is to only select the groups one really wants to apply automation to, i.e. where the destination controls are present and then removing these automations before removing the elements.
