Since November 2022, Grammy-nominated and BAFTA-award-winning film composer, musician, and author Nicholas Hooper has started each day by spending 15 minutes creating new poetry or prose, and composing music to go with each work. In October 2023, we started releasing these 'Dawnings' publicly on his website, wordandnote.com.
To celebrate the 100th release, I sat down with Nick to find out what he's learned from over a year of capturing his raw and (largely) unedited creative inspiration before doing anything else each morning. Since October 2023, he's amassed a catalogue of over six hours of music that's been listened to by hundreds of thousands of people across the world.
Nick shares his process of starting each day with meditation and discusses the inspiration behind the project — from Gordon Giltrap to 'The Scribbler' — and how it keeps his creative skills sharp. Nick also reflects on the challenges and joys of sharing his work with others and hints at possible future directions for Dawnings.
