What's new

Disintergration's 35'th Anniversary.

I remember listening to the radio some time in 1987 and the DJ said “It was 20 years today, Sgt. Peppers was released”. And that felt like an eternity and a trivial piece of intel about a “boomer album” my dad liked (and I also liked but I was too adolescent and immature to ever confess at that time).

Today, an album is 35 years old and it feels like it was released the day before yesterday or something. WTF? Oh no. My kids were right. I AM a boomer.

The only album of theirs I knew well and must have owned it on CD.
Maybe give it a spin on Spotify to see how I relate to it these days.

I was with my buddy, browsing for new CDs at Tower Records, during one of our weekly pilgrimages to that almighty mecca of music, when the newly arrived Disintegration CD started playing on the store's speaker system. Instant goosebumps. I pretty much love everything by the Cure, but Disintegration is truly magical.

It's fun being a Cure fan because in spite of their worldwide popularity and amazing catalog of recognizable songs, they've always managed to maintain a fringe status, as opposed to say REM or U2, who were underground and cool but then blew up so big that being a fan was nothing special.

But I can still feel like the Cure are my own personal secret. There's always someone in any crowd of people I'm with who's never heard of them, or might be familiar with a song or two, but knows nothing about the band itself.

Long live the Cure!

Don’t mention the G word
The Cure are such a wondrous creation. The Jangling guitar the sublime bass and the tribal drums.
I flip between Disintegration and Pornography as my favourite album, In reality its Disintegration 88% of the time.

Amazing album for sure, but Standing on the Beach was my first exposure and it will always be my "go to" Cure album. The Hanging Garden gets me every time. I think they started in the late 70's right? Old indeed!

fantastic album. love it! The Cure is my all time favorite band.
(sidenote, Stone Roses released the first album on the same day)

Phenomenal album, at a pivotal point in my life.

Yeah, maybe a bit melodramatic, but given the subject matter, appropriate.

One of the first CDs I owned if I recall correctly.
Had a quick listen on Spotify today and found it unlistenable.
35 years is a long time and tastes can change a lot.
But it was a big album for me for a short period.

I love the bit in the liner notes that says to turn up the volume when playing the album. What a great way to blow away unsuspecting listeners, since the opening track (Plainsong) starts with really quiet chimes, basically forcing you turn up the volume, and then BLAM! the full band comes led by a super lush synth pad.

One of my favorite song moments in pop music.
