    Which brass is biggest?

Cinebrass PRO+Metropolis Ark 1+Metropolis Ark 3 - this is my go to setup for epic brass. The truth is you need to combine different libraries to get badass sounding brass, or strings, or whatever.

Which sample library made you go "wow this is insanely good"?

Metropolis Ark 1, actually, i think this is still one of the best sounding libraries.

What kind of synth can I use ?

Serum, or vital. Low braam synth sounds like a FM synthesis. High lead just a variation of supersaw.

Sooo many reverbs but which one would you prefer for orchestral use?

Lexicon or Valhalla's reverbs (any), not convolution reverbs, my opinion.

    EQing orchestral instruments?

When i compare my raw mix (writed by libraries) with other mixes TSFH, or solo Bergersens, i hear that my mixes just dont have any of high frequencies and have very heavy boost on the mid freq. So i just boost high and for mid i'm using multiband compression. That gives me more clear mix.

Cinematic Studio Strings + Brass vs Heavyocity Novo Strings + Forzo Brass?

1st setup definitely. CSS has good legato (what Thomas use all the time) witch more better than legato from NOVO. About brass here is i can't suggest. I learn on TB music a lot of time and still dont understand how he is doing trombones sound.

Reverb as an effect and then another one for room placement?

Well, in my template i always have reverbs for orchestra (sends), for other instruments, like synths, FX, solo inst. im using reverb (shimmer or whatever) as insert effect and dont send them on the sendbus. It's cuz i want to hear some different dimension in track. But, anyway you can do what...

Valhalla reverbs as send or separate?

Send if its for main space of track. And insert if i need unique space for instrument (like solo violin, vocal or flute).

Cinematic Studio Strings -does it replace Cinematic Strings 2?

My choice is a CS2 cuz it sounds like really big cinematic strings.

How many of you separate your ERs & Tails?

After huge experiments with ER, tail, convo, algo reverbs, i find that 1 simple reverb plugin (lexicon hall) is enough for me. Now i focused more on libraries and arranging.

    Help taming/EQ French Horns

Actually, fighting with picks and loud resonances with help of equalizer is bad idea. Cuz, yes, this is destroy sound. More usefull tip, is use multiband compressor. MB compressor will reducing those resonanses.

    Best limiters/'louderners'

Fab filter Pro-L nice one, but with A.O.M. Invisible Limiter you can get more loudness without "pumping" and distortion.

Recommended all round EQ and compressor for orchestral scoring?

If you want get mix like two steps from hell, you should use multiband compressor with pretty heavy settings (cuz you need more "flat" dynamic). But, if you need mix like John Williams, propably you shouldnt use any compression.
  26. Serg Halen

Recommended all round EQ and compressor for orchestral scoring?

I use ReaEQ from reaper 5 and jsCompShaper (actually free compressor).

    Reverb sounds too long

Fast tempo - shorter reverb. Slow tempo - longer reverb.

    How are atmospheric drones made?

    1. Take any synth, or any library with soft sound (electro piano, dulcimer). 2. Write some part in tonality, for this synth/library. 3. Insert valhalla shimmer (or analog) 100% wet, and valhallavintageverb 100%. 4. Enjoy!

    Orchestral Samples - Ambience

What i learned in a last couple of mouth - is using a few bus sends with different reverbs with some changes in a settings for orchestral sections (strings hall, brass hall, percussion hall etc). Its gives really huge, massive ambience. 1 instance for all sections gives to flat ambience and a...

    Reducing Transients Transparently

Actually.. This is pretty ez, just put compressor on master and turn down threshold, then knob gain turn up. After compressor put limiter. Profit. A little example
  31. Serg Halen

What are your mix levels like before mastering?

Picks can be like -10, or -20, this is doesn't matter. I have compressor on the master, and he comress around -2/-3 db, and if i need i can up gain like example +10, or +20 db. And after compressor i put limiter just for limiting over 0 db. This setup working for all types of music, styles...

Making samples less in your face

I think you need apply more room reverb for your instruments. Not hall, cuz this is will blurry you mix. But if you add short room for dry instruments, then you get more warm and soft sound, whatever library are you use. And actually that's can help making a "virtual stage", not a hall reverb...
