Small dictionary of words for Realivox Blue

There's no way we could make a full dictionary, but I'm posting this collection of words because they are instructive examples of how to make words. We intentionally included some words that Blue doesn't do very well, so you'll see what sorts of compromises I'll make when faced with certain challenges. (We have a massive update in early 2021 that includes missing vowels and will solve a lot of these problems.)

Note that some of these words use vowels that are "diphthongs," meaning the vowel is a transition from one vowel to another. For example:
I (or eye) is a diphthong from Ah (or Uh) to Ee. Try saying "eye" yourself. Say it slowly and you will notice this transition.
A (as in "ace") is a diphthong from Eh to Ee
Ow is a diphthong from Eh to Oo. (Actually it's from short-a to Oo, but that won't be available until the update in early 2021.)
Oy is a transition from Oh to Ee.

To play a diphthong is Realivox Blue, you need to be in Vowel or Phrase Legato mode. Play the first vowel, then keep holding that first note as you play the "Repeat Key" (the red "B1" key, an octave below middle C) which trigger the transition into the next "syllable." Here is a video which demonstrates this process: "Fly with Realivox Blue." (Seriously, watch the video!)

Also note that it's usually better to place a consonant at the start of the next syllable, rather than end of the first syllable. For instance "Beasty" is better as Bee-Stee rather than Beest -Ee.

I tried to get fancy with moving stuff around and accidentally deleted the original version of this thread. And yes, I hit the "Permanently Delete" button. (Don't ask. Sometimes I'm too clever for my own good.) So if you had commented on this, that's why your posts are deleted and the thread has a new start date of today.

From now on, "Be more careful!" is my new motto!

Luckily, Google cache had a copy from last week, so I could copy and paste the first post.

One tool I've found really handy for figuring out phonetics is the https://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/cgi-bin/cmudict (CMU Pronouncing Dictionary). It uses the ARPABET, but it's pretty simple to figure out. Type in a word (or words) and you'll get a phonetic transcription of the word, so you don't need to work it out yourself. (And it's free to incorporate into software programs, hint hint o_O).

Here are some ARPABET vowel pairs that can be used to substitute when you don't have the diphthong available:

AW 🡆 AA UX "cow"
AY 🡆 AA IY "hide"
EY 🡆 EH IY "ate"
OW 🡆 OH UX "oat"
OY 🡆 UH IY "toy"
UW 🡆 UH UX "two"

In Blue's phonetics, that's something like (untested, I don't have Blue):

AW 🡆 Ah Oo "cow"
AY 🡆 Ah Ee "hide"
EY 🡆 Eh Ee "ate"
OW 🡆 Eh Oo "oat"
OY 🡆 Oh Ee "toy"
UW 🡆 Oh Oo "two"

Finally, here are some replacements that are common in English speech (for example, in "DREAM" that Mike gave above):

T R 🡆 CH R
D R 🡆 J R
G S 🡆 G Z
S P 🡆 S B
S T 🡆 S D
S K 🡆 S G

We have a massive update in early 2021 that includes missing vowels and will solve a lot of these problems.
Can you share just a little bit more about this massive update & its timing?? Just super curious and very much looking forward to its use.

Timing? I'd like to say Spring of this year, but I've been saying "in a few months" (and really believing it!) for years. So ... get a dartboard and write random years and months on it. Then put on a blindfold. Spin yourself around 10 times. Then tell me where the dart lands.

We already recorded and edited all the new samples, which includes pretty much all the missing vowels and consonants you would need to sing full English lyrics. (Blue was always intended for Latin or enigmatic lyrics, not actual "songs.") We finished that part a few years ago.

Then I started assembling and coding it, but I got sidetracked with Hip Hop Creator and now Sunset Strings, as well as significant updates for Fingerpick and RealiDrums, so Blue got put on the back burner.

Then I toyed with the idea of putting Blue onto it's own player, instead of Kontakt. Kontakt has a couple shortcomings for an instrument like this (most significantly that you can't just type onto the interface), so last year, I hired someone to create a custom player, using the HISE platform. A pile of money later ... that didn't work out. (Kontakt has a few disadvantages ... but it has a lot of advantages that we take for granted.) So now we're back to Plan A of doing this on Kontakt. Especially since I signed my life away to Native Instruments last month to commit to the Kontakt Player exclusively for this one. ;)

Much of the work for the update is already done, but I would guess I have a month or two of work left ... if I can actually do that work without distraction. Between other aspects of Realitone, plus running this forum, plus working with employees remotely (which takes a lot of extra time on my end to set up), plus things like gathering data for taxes (I need to do that this week), it's really hard to get too many hours in a day where I can just do this.

This is one I really want to finish, though, since vocals are why I started this company. The main things this update will have are:
1. All (or at least almost all) vowels and consonants
2. Automatic diphthongs. (I, ow, oy, etc.)
2. Speed control. Currently she's designed to only sing slow lines, but V2 can sing faster. Not bebop, but definitely faster than now.
3. A translator where you can type in English words and it automatically translates that into the phonetics. You'll still be able to adjust those phonetics, of course, but given that "How do I make this word?" is the number one question we get, I think this will be a big help.

With a little luck, I'll finish the strings this week, then onward to the Blue update.

Thanks for this generous helping of info! I'm giddy with anticipation. Sounds like you are reading my mind for what I'm needing/wanting/dreaming about.

Hope the months ahead are smooth, happy & productive for you.

In addition to the CMU Dictionary, there's the ever-popular Automatic Translation of English Text to Phonetics by Means of Letter-to-Sound Rules. It's pretty easy to implement, and makes a nice fallback when users enter words not in the dictionary.

Just don't expect it to pronounce "taco" correctly. :P

Hey Mike! Any updates? Am looking to release a project using realivox in May but would definitely need the updates to make it happen. Thanks! :)

This is so detailed - It's like a wordbuilder's dream.

"There are two and a half octaves of “k” samples (32 samples) that go into “ah.” Another 32 of “k” into “eh.” And so on. For each consonant, that’s six sets for each vowel."

Are you kidding me??? That's brilliant. Not sure when I'll be able to pick these up but I already can't wait to have them join my other choirs/soloists.

Teresa's operatic vibrato is recorded I'm guessing? That would be a crazy good scripted vibrato if not

….you didn‘t get the passage with the blindfolded, turntabled darts, I guess…?!

I even tried to punish Mike with not buying any new stuff (even if I REALLY want Sunset Strings 😓) until he releases his promised updates, but he doesn‘t care… he’s a quite wealthy HipHop producer, Realitone is just his training playground to understand sample industry business (think that‘s the ultra-short summarize of what he explained some time ago 😂).

@Mike Greene any update on the, er, update?
It really is embarrassing. I mean that truly, and I'm really, really hoping we can finish that update this summer. But ... how many times have I said that before? And I swear, I truly mean it each time I say it!

Some day I want to make a video detailing what it's really like running Realitone. I love doing this, to the point where I've stopped most of my composing and record work, because Realitone is more fun.

However ... I am a terrible manager. I finally have staff helping me now, but that actually turns into more diversions, as they come up with ideas, too, and all the projects sound like fun. So we have over a dozen unreleased libraries in various stages of completion. (ADD is not your friend when you're trying to run a company! )

With all that said, we have a pretty big release in early June (which I thought we'd release last year, but it keeps expanding in scope), and then Blue 2 is next. On the bright side, the vast majority of the work is already done, so in theory, it should only take a couple months.

Summer’s long gone. Blue 2 by the holidays, maybe?

Hmmm ... I was about to say that's not possible, but it actually might be possible. Unlikely, but possible.
Come on, man! You can do it! We believe in you! 👍😉 I did a mock up with Blue singing a full set of lyrics on a song of mine and although it was a little mush mouthed, it was actually pretty affecting. You make really good instruments.

Has the "massive update in early 2021" been posted? If not, why and when. Love the product but miss some features that were to be in the update.
