Gotta ask- Velocity layers in EW vs VSL

I own both developer's libs. I have Platinum PLAY from EW and VSL Vienna SE Plus as well as a bunch of DL instruments like Epic Horns. Now, while I certainly love VSL especially their performance legato, one thing has been troubling me- the # of velocity layers endemic to each patch. I was playing my KX8 this evening and played pppp and on EW 18vln pizz, I could achieve a very quiet sound. I did the same thing using VSL Appassionata Strings (yes, I have the full library, not the add on from Vienna SE) and could not achieve the same quiet level. Am I missing something here? How many levels of different samples does VSL use as compared to EW? I know some EW sounds have up to 6 velocity switching samples.

I love VSL but this is a little disconcerting. The way around this with something like Epic horns is that I re-program the velocity controller to respond to mod wheel changes instead (the VI player makes this simple). But even then, I notice distinct changes in timbre and volume in a very short span.

I also own both and like both. Velocity layers have always seemed deeper with EW however.

I think both have 3/4 velocity layers, maybe just the volume modulation via velocity is different. The patch you mention from EW for example has on some notes 3 on some notes 4 velocity layers with a couple of streched notes here and there. The violin pizzicato patches in the Kontakt-bundled VSL samples have 3 velo layers and consistently streched notes but those are supposed to be light edition-ish stuff after all.

Last time i checked, it's the other way around. On average, VSL has 4 vel and EW has 2. Legato perf. have only 2 layer because it would use too much ram/space if they recorded more vel layers. VI SE, a cut down version has 3 vel layers.

I don't think you should compare EW Gold or Platinum with VI SE since SE is a cut down version and EW Gold/Platinum is not as far as velocity layers.

Strangely enough, VSL has double the velocity layer and it's harder to get a pp. I think it's due to the fact that VSL was recorded close. I wonder how people deal with this?

P.S. In Kontakt, I've built a 5 vel MW instrument with the 14-VI sus using the flautendo(pp) patch. It's pretty cool.

early Vsl samples have hard jumps between layers. Thats one of the most problems i had with Opus 1.

Ewqlso is way smoother in my experience.

I use a combination of velocity cross fades and expression for dynamics. Expression is mandatory for pp & works really well IMO.

Makes sense.

Cheers.
